Emerging adulthood
What issues are addressed in this comic ?
As we watch the CBC documentary Generation Boomerang
think:  Is 'emerging adulthood' a new stage of  lifecycle development?
Consider the evidence before you make a judgement...
:)

Tuesday April 22 - Unit 4: ADULTHOOD

Click here for a list of topics that will be on next Monday's test.

Last week we talked about conflict.
Types of conflict, why it occurs, when it occurs, how it's different in different cultures.
As we transition to a new unit on Adulthood, we'll look at the conflict between your generation (aka the Millennial generation) and your parents' (or boss') generation, the Baby Boomers.

Summarize the message from this video, then watch this video response.

We'll discuss WHEN a person should be considered an adult.

Wed April 16 & Thurs April 17

Wednesday:
  • reflect on progress to date, set some goals, & assess learning skills
  • decide on a date for the adolescence unit test

Thursday:
What do you fight about w/ your parents?
Why is p-a conflict so common?
How often do you eat together as a family?

Tues April 15

Today, we will look at physical changes that occur during adolescence and early adulthood.
Think: What do you already know?

-Read the 2 articles and answer the assigned questions.  We'll take up the answers at the end of class.

Please submit your media socialization assignment with the rubric, now due.
We will have a couple of presentations to watch as well.

Media can socialize us in positive ways, too...

Wed April 9

Seen enough, or want more?
We can watch an entire documentary on the impact of Hip Hop music!

OPTION:
if you prefer, instead of watching the documentary, you can locate an article on the internet about gender roles in the media.  Email me your reactions to the article, and email them to me, along with a link to the article you located.

Reminder: your media socialization assignment is due Monday! Make sure you let Mrs. Burgie know if you plan to present.

Tues April 8

For the remainder of this week we will revisit how media socializes us.

  • Yesterday I asked you to think about the experience of knowing a song+music video, versus the song alone. Let's look at an example:

Q:  how do music lyrics and videos socialize us?

Think about (take notes?) on these 3 questions while we watch the film, Dreamworlds III.
    • What are some of the 'conventions' (common style elements) of music videos?
    • Are these conventions common to all types of music?
    • What aspects of teenage identity have been shaped by media images/stories?

Mon April 7
